Furnace and Zabriskie

Wednesday, November 9, 2016

I heard Trump's speech last night, and if he had been like this all along, I wouldn't have so many qualms about him. Let's hope the presidency changes him. He was never that conservative to begin with, but he's bound to have to make too many compromises unless he's able to bully congress. My main concern is how he will have the opportunity to replace several supreme court justices, and that's scary. But the US will live through it, just as it did with Reagan, and Bush I and II. No need to consider moving elsewhere yet. I left Ridgecrest just as Hilary was giving her belated speech, so I didn't hear all of it.

I'm now in Furnace Creek, and the sun is well below the mountains, but it's not quite dark yet. I'm sitting at a picnic table next to the visitors center, but no wi-fi, so I don't know when I'll be able to send this to you. Gmail on my phone lets me save an email draft with no connection. I'm waiting for the first concert to start; it's located right across the parking lot. I set up my tent earlier, but it must have been close to 90F, lots of sweating was involved. I didn't have time to do much otherwise, but take a quick look at the nearby Zabriskie Point. They've redone the lookout, but it hasn't changed much and access is the same as before, so you can still go wander. But I felt my hips as I was carrying some water.

The sky is not that dark because the moon is rising before sunset: very few stars because of that.
