Announcement to campus (first) The central campus web server www.ucsc.edu will move from bob.ucsc.edu (managed by the library) to jellylorum.ucsc.edu (managed by CATS) in the next 30 days. You are receiving this message because we believe that you currently have web pages on bob. This message is to warn you of the change and to describe in some details the procedures you will need to follow to migrate your pages to this new machine. To make it clearer, we will use the name bob to refer to the current www server, and jellylorum to refer to the future www server. Once the transition is completed on June 15, www.ucsc.edu will be a synonym for jellylorum. Bob runs the NCSA web server under DEC OSF-1 (a UNIX OS), while jellylorum runs IIS under Microsoft Windows NT. The latter will easily handle any static HTML pages you may currently have on bob. However if you are using dynamic pages with server side includes, or cgi-bin scripts (other than mailform, Counter, redirect, webreport), please contact us as soon as possible since migrating your files could take extra time. You will probably want to use the www2 server instead since www2 runs the NCSA web server on SunOS (a UNIX OS) which is very similar to what is currently running on bob. In any case, whether your pages reside on www or www2, people will still be able to access them from the old URL. Here is what you need to do: 1. Before May 30, request a web directory on the new machine by filling out the form: http://www2.ucsc.edu/cats/sc/services/www/webunit.shtml If you do not already have a CATS/Athena account, you will need to request one first (accounts are free): http://www2.ucsc.edu/cats/sc/services/accounts/ 2. On May 31, your files will be moved to jellylorum, and placed in the web directory you requested in step 1. You will no longer be able to modify and update your files on bob at that time, but they will still be accessible via the web. 3. From June 1 to 14, become familiar with your web pages on jellylorum, and verify all their links. Be sure that none of your local links mention the server by name (use relative links instead). Modify your pages as needed. To learn how to edit your files on jellylorum, please check: http://www2.ucsc.edu/cats/sc/services/www/iis.shtml 4. On June 15, the www.ucsc.edu name will be shifted from bob to jellylorum, and the transition will be complete.
