Molière: Tartuffe

Monday, February 17, 2014

Tartuffe is a classical French play that everyone should read or preferably see. It was written in the 1600s, so some of the ideas about the roles of men and women are outdated, but other aspects are still right on, with many funny moments as expected in a comedy. This prose translation of the original French avoids the awkward stilted English rhymes, but obviously if you know French, read it or see it in French if possible, otherwise this is a good substitute.

Performance: I saw this play on February 2, 2014 at the Shady Shakespeare Theatre Company at San Jose State University. This play was done professionally with good costumes and decent acting from most. The venue is a small theater in the round (or square), but unfortunately the play was not well attented.
